There
was a grand display on Tenakee's waterfront this summer when a
pod of five or six Humpback Whales made an appearance, boiling
the waters and feeding on some underwater delicacy. Eventually,
they glided across the inlet and then were gone. Later, when the
tide went out, we discovered what they had been feeding on. Large
areas of beach had turned pink from millions upon millions of
washed-up krill, a miniature shrimp less than an inch long and
the width of a pencil line.
