Artists
usually save their sketchpads, I certainly do. They contain
the raw materials for all my paintings. These two individuals
came from a 1980's sketchbook that I took along on a sketching
trip to the Eskimo village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island.
The drum is a stretched piece of walrus stomach wrapped over
a bent piece of wood. The drummer beats the rim of the drum
with a stick. Any occasion will do for dancing and drumming.
