Rie’s granddaughter, Mercedes, age 8, wrote Santa a heartfelt letter asking for only one thing, a small hamster to replace one that died last year. She knew I didn’t like the rodents but she believed that if there was a Santa, he would come through for her. We all left on the ferry at 2:00 am Christmas morning. The ferry arrived in Tenakee at 10:00am. Well, miracle upon miracles there was a small hamster waiting for her under the tree. Mercedes was thrilled with ‘Hammy’ and we brought him home to Juneau. The next night however he escaped by climbing up the water bottle holder and slipped into a wall vent in our kitchen. We have food and water waiting where he slipped in, but as of this printing, ‘Hammy’ is still at large, scratching his way around the bowels of our home. We hope ‘he’ is not pregnant...
