CELEBRATING
ALASKAS WOMEN IN POLITICS
Rie
Muozs daughter-in-law, Cathy Muoz, is running for the Alaska State
Senate as a Republican this fall after six years on the Juneau city
council. Cathy Muoz has used the Rie Muoz image, Both the Sun and
Moon Belong to Women for her campaign poster. The poster size has
been reduced to 15" x 17" and is presented to those donating
$50 or more to her campaign.
Cathys family has a long history in politics. Her father,
Elton Engstrom, was a Senator for Juneau, her grandfather was a Territorial
and State Senator and her grandmother was one of first women in the
territorial legislature before Alaska was a state. The election is
November 5, 2002.
Good luck Cathy!

WINTER
IN TENAKEE

Rie
Muoz has been having a grand time in Tenakee the last few months
enjoying her cabin. Her granddaughter Mercedes, age 10, is enrolled
in the Tenakee School for the second half of this year. When I went
to school there back in the 60s we were in a one room red school
house. All grades and all 12 kids were taught together by one teacher.
Now there is a larger school, 2 teachers, an aid, with only 11 students.
If attendance drops to 10 the district can shut the school so every
kid is appreciated in Tenakee. People are friendly to visitors but
if you have kids they are even nicer!

AMERICAN
SCIENTIST ARTICLE

The March/April issue of American Scientist magazine features the
Rie Muoz image, Cats Cradle in an article entitled, Is String
Theory Even Wrong? The article is not art relatedit discusses advanced
mathematical work in theoretical particle physics. In any event its
fun to see Ries work in different venues.
