RIE
MUNOZ, DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES
As part
of the 1999 Commencement ceremonies Rie Munoz was honored
by the University of Alaska SE with an honorary doctorate
degree of humanities. Rie attended a dinner in her honor a
few days before with the Chancellor of the University of Alaska
along with previous winners of this award.
During
a short speech, Rie told of her first Alaska painting of a
Russian Church that she gave to her new neighbor.
|
Last year
he gave the original painting back because he was heading to
the Pioneers Home. Rie told of the estimated 2000 Alaskan paintings
she's done since then. She quoted an early 20th Century
American painter, Robert Henri, who said, There is no
more real life than the adventurous one of living, liking and
expressing the things of ones own time. Rie said she was trying
to express the things of her own time in Alaska as an artist
and that she intends to keep on doing just that.
The Commencement Ceremonies were carried out a few days later,
with much pomp and circumstance. Close to 500 people packed
the Centennial Hall in Juneau as Rie Munoz was given this high
honor. She spoke to the crowd and told them that most of them
in the hall have probably been subjects, albeit unwittingly,
to her paintings over the years. Rie ended this special evening
by saying it was the beauty of the land that brought her to
Alaska but it was the people that made her stay.
