CHESS
GAME
"Chess
Game" is Munoz's most recent work. Four hundred prints were donated
to Alaska's 'FRANK committee' (Fiscally Responsible People Needing
Knowledge), a group fighting the upcoming ballot initiative, which
proposes to move the legislature from Juneau to Anchorage. The NO
MOVE sign on the side of the building refers to this initiative. Munoz
had a large reception at her gallery in Juneau on September 4th. About
300 people attended. The Messerschmidt building in the painting used
to be the home of Purity Bakery and was named after an old time Juneau
family that ran it. My best friend's Grandmother, Amy Messerschmidt
owned the bakery 40 years ago. As kids we would go behind the counter
and Grandma Messerschmidt would scowl at us while handing us a bag
of donuts.

politics and art merge at local gallery
The day after the "Chess Game" reception at
the Rie Munoz Gallery, Rie flew off to London for a three week trip,
with plans to meet up with her Army buddy Fran Nuelle. Their plans included
attending the theatres, going to Piccadilly Circus, Harrah's Department
Store, the Tate and British Museums, riding the 'tube' (subway), and
enjoying the pub grub. Perhaps we will see some London images in her
sketch book when she returns.
SOUTHEAST
PHONEBOOK COVER
The
latest Southeast Alaska Phone Directory features Munoz's "Whales
in the Inlet" on the front cover. The cover was so popular
that the company was advertising the phone book on the radio.
I'm not the
only person collecting these books; they seem to be disappearing
from the phone booths.
