Dogs are not permitted on St George Island in the Bering Sea due to the large number of marine mammals giving birth there, but a subspieces of the Arctic Fox abounds. These small grey foxes are only somewhat wary of humans, but not to the extent of preventing them from coming into the village. The foxes boldly look for scraps of food, to take naps under somebody's porch or even to enter a house if the kitchen door is left open and delicious aromas waft to the outside.
