There was quite a debate in the village of Tenakee Springs whether or not to bring state ferry service to the community and, if so, whether to build a dock that would accommodate cars. Finally, the people decided the ferry could come in to Tenakee, but not vehicles. The entire community turned out for the inaugural visit of the M/V LeConte. The local band tuned up their instruments, and some of the Tenakee gents danced with Alaska's first lady, Bella Hammond, who was on board for the occasion.
