UNICEF, the United Nation organization, asked me if I would od an illustration of "story knife" for their engagement calendar. The story knife is a beautiful ivory knife used to draw in the snow. Eskimo fathers make them for their daughters, never for sons. The little girls gather around and tell each other stories and as they talk they draw symbols, like shorthand, in the snow. UNICEF accepted the painting for the calendar, but later decided to use photographs thta year instead.
